Our Story

Around 1952, tire manufacturers in Brazil, from different countries and with different standards, felt the need to standardize the technical standards of their products, both in terms of dimensions and conditions of use. This need also arose from the growth seen at that time in the automobile industry, which is of an equally diversified origin.
A working group was formed which, guided by standards adapted to Brazilian conditions, from “The Tire and Rim Association” of the USA and “The European Tire and Rim Technical Organization”, brought together the tire manufacturers and had the collaboration of most manufacturers of wheels, rims and valves.
Over the years and constant development of the automotive industry, it became necessary to give greater emphasis and spread to technical standards on tires, rims, valves and their components.
On February 2, 1968, the existing working group became the BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION OF TIRES AND RIMS (ABPA), legally constituted, with the purpose of studying the technical problems regarding dimensions, standards, employment conditions and tire assembly, inner tubes, valves, rims and wheels, elaborate and disseminate the technical norms and specifications on the matter.
From 1986, with the objective of expanding its studies and the internationalization of such standards, ABPA initiated contacts with other representative entities of the tire and rim industries, within the scope of South America, which were increasingly developed and encouraged by the development of MERCOSUR, culminating at the end of 1998 with the creation of ALAPA, an entity of continental scope, supported, initially, by all its effective partners and affiliates at the Latin American level.
